Kashmiris Deserve Self-Determination, Pakistan Tells UN Security Council via Moscow Envoy
Pakistan Urges UNSC to Uphold Kashmiris’ Right to Self-Determination: Envoy to Russia
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Ambassador to Moscow, Muhammad Khalid Jamali, has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to ensure the long-promised right of self-determination for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), stressing that its denial remains the root cause of tensions in the region.
In an interview with Russian state news agency TASS published on Monday, Jamali stated:
“The root cause of the problem in Jammu and Kashmir is the denial of the right to self-determination, as promised to the Kashmiri people by the international community through numerous UN Security Council resolutions. This must be addressed to achieve lasting peace.”
On the Pahalgam Incident
Responding to questions about Pakistan’s stance on the Pahalgam incident, the ambassador said Islamabad was open to a transparent investigation and called for an end to the blame game.
“We want the investigation to be conducted properly. Without addressing root causes, it is unfair that Pakistan is blamed every time such incidents occur,” he noted, drawing a parallel with Russia’s emphasis on addressing root causes in the Ukraine conflict.
He emphasized that unresolved political disputes breed resentment and instability, making scapegoating a convenient but unhelpful tactic.
“It’s always very easy to blame and make someone a scapegoat,” Jamali remarked.
Pakistan-Russia Relations
On bilateral ties, the ambassador highlighted a series of recent high-level engagements and described the relationship between Islamabad and Moscow as “very good.”
“Since the last meeting between President Putin and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in Astana, there have been several high-level visits. Just in the last month, there have been at least four exchanges between the two countries,” he said.
He confirmed that diplomatic consultations have remained consistent and praised Russia’s role in international affairs.
“We consider Russia an important global player and continue to consult on various issues.”
Security and Diplomacy
Jamali also expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements at Pakistan’s embassy in Moscow.
“According to the Vienna Convention, Russia has provided us with sufficient security. The Russian people are very hospitable, and we’re pleased with the arrangements,” he said.
